According to the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics), cave-ins have historically been responsible for an average of 24 worker fatalities and 88 injuries each year, at U.S.-based worksites.
This high rate of accidents are due to the fact that excavation and trenching operations are not only technically challenging, they present their own unique hazards and solutions to address them.
OSHA standards require, before any worker entry, that employers have a Competent Person inspect trenches daily and as conditions change to ensure elimination of excavation hazards. A Competent Person is an individual who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards or working conditions that are hazardous, unsanitary, or dangerous to workers, soil types, and protective systems required, and who is authorized to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate these hazards and conditions.
After completing this course, employees should understand the roles and responsibilities of a Competent Person and recognize the hazards of excavations. Learners should also be able to recognize how to preplan for an excavation, identify the different types of soil, and identify excavation protection systems.
This training is available in English and Spanish language versions.
