The HAZWOPER standard applies to five distinct groups of employers and their employees.   • Clean-up operations required by a governmental body, whether federal, state, local, involving hazardous substances-- including hazardous waste -- that are conducted at controlled hazardous waste sites;
  • Corrective actions involving clean-up operations at sites covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA) as amended (42 U.S.C. 6901 et seq.);
  • Voluntary clean-up operations at sites recognized by federal, state, local, or other governmental bodies as uncontrolled hazardous waste sites;
  • Operations involving hazardous wastes that are conducted at treatment, storage, and disposal facilities regulated by Title 40 Code of Federal Regulations Parts 264 and 265 pursuant to RCRA, or by agencies under agreement with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to implement RCRA regulations; and
  • Emergency response operations for releases of, or substantial threats of release of, hazardous substances regardless of the hazard location.

 OSHA HAZWOPER Hands-on Training Requirements:

While you may have heard different, in order to be compliant with OSHA training requirements, all 40-Hour HAZWOPER students must have hands-on training including an opportunity to don and doff (put on and take off) equipment, respirators, SCBA’s, etc.

Compliance Solutions includes this important part of your training (at NO additional cost) however, the majority of our online competitors don’t even offer this integral part of 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training!

After completing the "online" portion of the course, just call us the Monday before the class you wish to register for. Once completed, students finish the certification by completing an online examination. We provide professionally printed (not e-mail) Certifications (suitable for framing) and a 40-Hour HAZWOPER Wallet Card for verification at DOD and controlled Hazmat sites requiring credentials.

      Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

      Is Hands-on Training required for 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training?

      Yes! Per OSHA requirements, 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification must include Instructor-Led, hands-on training. Given the amount of time and money, you will invest, make 100% sure your course (especially online courses) include hands-on training.

      How long is OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification good for?

      OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification is valid from 365 days from the time you complete training. To keep your certification current,  an 8-hour refresher course is required annually and includes updates or changes to HAZWOPER and related standards.

      What is OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training?

      OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training was designed for workers likely to be exposed to or handle hazardous materials. Typical job descriptions include: removing or handling underground tanks (UST's) and piping, handling contaminated soil or groundwater, subsurface investigations, and construction work in which hazardous materials may be present. HAZWOPER training may also be required in situations where HAZMAT is prepared, packaged, labeled, marked, stored, or shipped for disposal and for facilities where hazardous wastes are treated, stored, or disposed of.

      What’s the Difference between the OSHA 24 and OSHA 40?

      40 Hour HAZWOPER Training or OSHA 40 is specified for workers who handle or need to dispose of hazardous materials. This includes facilities where HAZMAT or hazardous wastes are prepared, packaged, labeled, marked, stored, shipped, or disposed of.  24 Hour Training or OSHA 24 is for workers who may come in contact with HAZMAT or hazardous wastes but, do not have, per their job description, responsibilities for clean up or removal. Sample job titles include drillers, surveyors, contractors, drivers, administrative personnel & employees not specifically tasked with Hazardous clean-up duties and activities. Due to the inherent risks on hazmat sites, many companies now require all site employees (even those who are not directly responsible for hazmat clean-up) receive 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification so they are properly trained and aware of any eventuality while on site.

      Who needs 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training?

      Personnel involved in the removal or handling of underground tanks (UST's), piping, handling contaminated soil or groundwater, subsurface investigations, construction activities in which hazardous materials may be present or encountered, and facilities where HAZMAT is prepared, packaged, labeled, marked, stored or shipped for disposal. This includes any facility where hazardous wastes are treated, stored, or disposed of.

      What is the purpose of HAZWOPER?

      OSHA originally developed the HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) standard to ensure employees involved with hazardous waste cleanup, disposal, or emergency response are adequately prepared and understand the dangers inherent to HAZWOPER sites and, more importantly, how to protect themselves on such sites.

      Where can I take 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training?

      40 Hour HAZWOPER Training can be taken in a classroom setting or by enrolling in an appropriate online course. For those who choose online training, it is imperative you choose a provider who includes as part of the course, adequate hands-on training. Courses without such training, in almost all situations, do not meet OSHA requirements for certification.

      What does the term HAZWOPER mean?

      HAZWOPER is short for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.

      How many levels of HAZWOPER Training are there?

      There are two HAZWOPER Training levels. 40 Hour HAZWOPER- Workers responsible for cleanup operations. 24 Hour HAZWOPER Training is for Occasional site workers that aren’t involved in cleanup operations. There are also two other courses related to HAZWOPER the 8 Hour HAZWOPER course is the refresher course for both 24 and 40 Hour HAZWOPER and the 16 Hour Course that upgrades 24-hour certification to 40 Hour!

      How do I get OSHA HAZWOPER Certification?

      All HAZWOPER courses can be taken either online or in a classroom setting except 40 Hour HAZWOPER. 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification and training must include instructor-led and hands-on training to meet both the intent (the "law") and the spirit of OSHA requirements.

      What OSHA standard covers 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training?

      29 CFR 1910.120(e) and (depending on your work duties and the site) 29 CFR 1910.120(q) are the standards that specify the requirements and training for HAZWOPER certification.

      How long will it take to get my 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification once I pass?

      Once you complete your final exam, we will send, via U.S. Mail, a certificate of completion (suitable for framing) and a Wallet Card,  Expedited certificates are available for a small additional fee. Call 800-711-2706 for information.
