Silica-Oil & Gas, General Industry and Maritime Industry - Spanish Version

Get Certified on OSHA's updated silica dust standard... and protect yourself!

This is the Spanish version of our Crystalline Silica Safety for General industry for the English version visit Crystalline Silica Safety Training

Compliance Solutions offers the most complete online course for Respirable Crystalline Silica Training Certification Training for General Industry (including Oil & Gas and Maritime workers) available in the industry today!

This interactive, self-paced, online training provides certification-level instruction for those working with or around Silica. Employers and supervisors alike will gain valuable safety knowledge working around silica as well as an understanding of OSHA requirements under 29 CFR 1910.1053(j)(3)(i)(A)(D)(E) plus protection levels, monitoring, medical surveillance & control plans.

OSHA estimates that over 2.3 million American workers are exposed to silica dust each year. Silica, the earth's most abundant mineral, is found in many common site materials such as sand, concrete, rock, and mortar. When Respirable Silica is released into the air, it is hazardous to workers and may cause Silicosis, a fatal, incurable respiratory disease. This happens when workers are exposed during cutting, grinding, blasting, jackhammering, or similar tasks.

    In this course, you'll learn:

    • The health hazards associated with exposure to respirable crystalline silica
    • Specific tasks in the workplace that could result in exposure to respirable crystalline silica
    • Specific measures the employer has implemented to protect employees from exposure to respirable crystalline silica, including engineering controls, work practices, and respirators to be used
    • .... and much, much more

Compliance with OSHA regulations and nationally recognized industry standards also affects your organization€™s financial risk due to audit findings, fines, litigation, and insurance costs. Help protect yourself, your workers, and your organization, and register today!

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

    What is Silica?

Silica or crystalline Silica is a common mineral and is often referred to
as quartz. Silica can be found in granite, soil, sand, concrete, and rock.

    How is Crystalline Silica created?

Crystalline Silica dust is created from chipping, cutting, grinding, and
drilling. Crystalline Silica can also be inhaled when removing paint or
rust, demolition of concrete and masonry, and dry sweeping or air blowing
    of concrete.

    What is Silica Training?

Silica Training will give students the tools and knowledge to protect
themselves while working with or around silica/crystalline Silica.
Training should include proper protection, engineering controls, and more!

    Is Silica Training Required?

Anyone that works around Silica should receive silica training. They
should understand at least the following:

    • The health hazards associated with exposure to respirable crystalline
      Silica
    • Specific tasks in the workplace that could result in exposure to
      respirable crystalline Silica
    • Specific measures the employer has implemented to protect
employees from exposure to respirable crystalline Silica, including
engineering controls, work practices, and respirators to be used
    • The section of the rule applies to maritime. General industry, or
      construction industry
    • The purpose and a description of the medical surveillance program intended
to monitor workers for exposure to Silica
What is the OSHA Silica Rule?

The new OSHA Silica Final Rule was created by OSHA (The Occupational
Safety and Health Administration) in 2006. It changed the permissible
limit for Silica to 50 micrograms of respirable crystalline silica per
cubic meter of air (50 μg/m3) as an 8-hour weighted average.

    Is Silica Safe?

Silica and crystalline Silica are far from safe inhaling them can cause
several health problems, including silicosis, kidney disease, and chronic
    obstructive pulmonary disease.

What does Silica do to the body?

Inhaling crystalline Silica can cause many health problems, including lung
cancer, silicosis (an incurable lung disease), kidney disease, and chronic
    obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

What is the permissible exposure limit for crystalline Silica?

OSHA created a new permissible exposure limit for Silica at (50 μg/m3) or
50 micrograms of respirable crystalline silica per cubic meter as an 8-hour
    weighted average.

What is the action level for exposure to crystalline Silica?

The action level for exposure to crystalline Silica is 25 micrograms per
    cubic meter.

What kind of PPE (personal protective equipment) is required to work around Silica?

The type of PPE you need depends on two factors how much silica dust you
are exposed to and the kind of work you do. The lowest form of PPE would be
filtering facepiece respirators with N-95 or higher, and the highest form
of PPE for Silica would be type CE abrasive-blasting for abrasive blasting.
Other forms of PPE used includes a half-face mask air-purifying respirator,
full face mask air-purifying respirator, powered air-purifying respirator
(PAPR), and a supplied-air respirator (SAR).

How fast can I get silicosis?

According to the CDC, chronic silicosis occurs after ten or more years of
exposure to low levels of crystalline Silica. Accelerated silicosis occurs
after 5 to 10 years of exposure to higher levels of crystalline Silica.
Acute silicosis can occur weeks or months after exposure to very high
    levels of crystalline Silica.
