Respirators are required in an environment where the breathing of contaminated dust, fog, fumes, mist, gases, smoke, sprays, or vapors where proper engineering controls aren’t in place to prevent breathing in.
According to OSHA, a Respiratory Protection Training Course must provide the following in a manner that is easy to understand:
- Why you need to use a respirator
- What your respirator can and can’t do
- How to properly inspect, put on, take off, and use the respirator you will be using
- How to check the seal
- How to effectively use a respirator in emergencies, including when it doesn’t work
- How to recognize medical signs and symptoms that may hinder the use of a respirator
- How to properly store and maintain respirators
Respiratory Training Refresher
Anyone who uses a respirator will be required to receive refresher training annually to refresh their memory and knowledge about proper respirator use.
You will also need to take a refresher course if the following happens:
- You get a new work assignment that has different respiratory hazards or respirator requirements than before
- You can't remember the information and skills you learned to use your respirator properly
- A situation comes up in which retraining is necessary to ensure safe respirator use, like if a supervisor thinks you are misusing a respirator or an accident occurs due to improper use
