    Fit Test

Qualitative fit testing is performed using Irritant Smoke, a standard procedure recommended by OSHA. After completing the fit-test, the student will be issued a pass/fail notification that should be returned to their employer for inclusion with their employee medical records.

Fit testing must be done before you can use your respirator while at work and must be done with the exact respirator you plan to use while working. The fit test must be performed every 12 months to make sure the respirator still fits!

Please Note: All fit tests are performed in conjunction with regularly scheduled local classes. As such, fit-testing is purchased as an "add-on" to class registration. If you are not scheduled for a class, you will be contacted by one of our Representatives to schedule the test. All tests are performed at specific locations, days, and times based on your location. Fit Tests are scheduled as follows:

Select the links above for dates and locations. Please contact Customer Service at 1-800-711-2706 Ext 1 or Contact our Customer Service Department with questions before you place an order.

To be fit tested, you MUST:

    1. Be clean-shaven and/or no makeup
    2. Bring the respirator used @ work with 2 organic vapor cartridges
    3. Have a current (within 30 days) Medical Clearance (available here)

All registrants will be provided these requirements (via your registration email) that MUST be signed and returned immediately.

Employees who do not comply with the above requirements will not receive a refund.

    Who needs Fit Testing?

Anyone that uses a respirator will need to have a fit test performed before using the respirator and every 12 months after the initial fit test. You must also have Respirator Training and a medical evaluation done before using a respirator during work duties.

Qualitative Fit Test VS Quantitative Fit Test

    Qualitative Fit testing
Qualitative fit testing uses the sense of smell or taste to determine leakage in a respirator and will provide a pass or fail at the end. This type of fit test is usually used for half-mask respirators that will cover just your nose and mouth. This includes filtering facepiece respirators, often called N95s and elastomeric respirators.

OSHA has four approved types of Qualitative Fit Testing, including:

    • Isoamyl acetate: This will test your sense of taste and tastes like bananas
    • Saccharin: This test also uses your sense of taste but has a sweet taste
    • Bittrex: The last test that uses your sense of taste and will leave a bitter taste in your mouth
    • Irritant Smoke: Will cause the user to cough if there is a leak

    Quantitative Fit Testing
Quantitative Fit Testing will use a machine to test the actual amount of leakages on a respirator. This type of test can be used on any tight-fitting respirator.

OSHA has three approved types of Quantitative Fit Testing, including:

    • Generated aerosol
    • Controlled Negative Pressure
    • Ambient aerosol

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a Qualitative Fit Test?

Qualitative Fit Testing is a pass/fail method of fit testing using the sense of smell and taste. A smoke irritant is used to find leaks in a respirator.

What is a respirator fit test?

Respirator Fit Testing ensures there are no leaks or problems with a respirator to ensure it will be safe to use on the job. The respirator fit test is required before you can perform any job duties using a respirator.

Do I need to bring my own respirator for Fit Testing?

Yes, you are required to have the Fit Test done on the respirator you will be using at work.

What is the difference between Qualitative and Quantitative fit testing?

A quantitative fit test will calculate the protection factor (PF) that a specific mask provides for you. A qualitative fit test will only tell if the mask works correctly with no leaks around the seal; no PF is calculated from the fit test.

Who is required to receive Fit Testing?

Anyone who will be using a respirator on a job site will be required to receive Fit Testing before performing any job duties with the respirator. You will also be required to get Respiratory Protection Training and a medical clearance too.

What is required before using a respirator at work?

Before using a respirator at work, you will be required to get Respiratory Protection Training, Medical Clearance (Evaluation), and Fit Testing before performing any job duties using a respirator.

Is a fit test required for an N95 respirator?

Yes, N95 respirators do require you to receive fit testing like all other respirators. You can use Qualitative Fit Testing for N95 respirators.

How long does it take to get a Qualitative fit test?

A qualitative fit test takes about 15-20 minutes to complete.

What are the two types of Fit Testing?

The two different respirator fit testing types are qualitative, a pass/fail test method that uses your sense of taste or smell or reaction to an irritant like smoke. Quantitative fit testing uses a machine to determine the actual amount of leakage.

How often do I need to get Fit Testing?

You will be required to get Fit Testing before using a respirator on the job and annually after the initial fit test. You will also be required to get a new fit test if you have large weight gain or loss, major dental work, or facial surgery, including scaring where the respirator's seal is formed.

Do you have to shave before a Respirator Fit Test?

While it is not required to be completely, clean-shaven OSHA says that the beard must be short enough to not interfere with the respirator's sealing surface. To be safe, it's a good idea to be clean-shaven before and while using the respirator.

What OSHA standard covers fit testing?

Every fit test you get should follow the requirements under OSHA Appendix A to § 1910.134 to be compliant!

What types of respirators require qualitative fit testing?

Qualitative fit testing is used on half-mask respirators that will cover just your nose and mouth, including filtering facepiece respirators, often called N95s and elastomeric respirators.

What types of respirators require quantitative fit testing?

The quantitative fit test is used on any full-face tight-fitting respirators.
