Overview

HAZ CAT: Hazardous Chemicals Characterization teaches you to turn an unknown solid or liquid into actionable information in minutes. Using a proven series of simple, safe field tests and only a few drops or a pea-sized amount of material, you'll learn to identify the hazards that drive handling, segregation, transportation, and disposal decisions.

Taught for more than 30 years to EPA Regions and fire department Hazardous Materials Teams, this course is built on real incidents, from dioxin-contaminated waste oil to flood-orphaned drums and crystallized ether. You'll leave ready to make the right call at the point of discovery, not after the incident.

Course Intro & Admin

  • Welcome and introductions: instructor background, participant experience, and the kinds of unknowns you encounter on the job
  • Course goals and format: what HAZ CAT does, what it doesn't do, and how the class is structured
  • Safety briefing: site rules, PPE expectations, and emergency procedures for working with unknowns
  • Prerequisites and expectations: confirming participant backgrounds in chemistry, toxicology, industrial hygiene, hazardous waste management, or HAZWOPER technician-level training
  • Materials and reagent review: an introduction to the test materials and the safety data sheets participants must read and understand before testing
  • Documentation and certification: how results are recorded on the HAZ CAT worksheet, and course completion requirements

What You'll Cover

Safe setup and personal protection, knowing when not to test, explosive and highly reactive hazards, ignitability and reactivity, corrosives and oxidizers, chlorinated compounds, toxics screening, extended testing with colorimetric tubes and direct-reading instruments, applying results to EPA waste categories and DOT hazard classes, and managing test wastes.

Certification

This training meets the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.120 (q)(6)(iii)(6)[B] to qualify as a Hazardous Materials Technician.
