Site Supervisor Refresher

Site Supervisor Refresher Training will teach students about any changes to site supervisor duties and training, including any updates to HAZWOPER.

This training must be done IN ADDITION to the required annual refresher under 29 CFR 1910.120(e) which is required for all HAZWOPER workers. EACH SITE must have at least one (1) person trained and qualified to act as a Site Supervisor.

What is a Site Supervisor? A Site Safety and Health Supervisor (or official) refers to the individual on a hazardous waste site who is;

  1. Responsible to the employer for site safety
  2. Has the authority and knowledge necessary to implement the site safety and health plan
  3. Verifies compliance with applicable safety and health requirements.

Who needs HAZWOPER Site Supervisor Refresher Training?

This course is for anyone who has already taken the Initial Site Supervisor Training Course and needs their annual refresher training.

OSHA's regulations 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(8) specifically states: Annual Refresher Training for managers and supervisors specified in paragraph (e)(4) of this section (HAZWOPER Site Supervisors), shall receive eight hours of refresher training annually on the items specified in paragraph (e)(4) of this section (suggested training topics for Supervisors & Managers) any critique of incidents that have occurred in the past year that can serve as training examples of related work, and other relevant topics.

PREREQUISITES: Before taking the OSHA Site Supervisor, OSHA requires the prospective Supervisor to receive at least the same level of training as the employees he/she will supervise. For OSHA HAZWOPER, this means completing a 40-Hour HAZWOPER class and any all subsequent annual refreshers (IF APPLICABLE).  IF you have not completed these courses, you MUST first complete these pieces of training.

Employees with Initial Site Supervisor training are required to complete an annual refresher for both 40-hour HAZWOPER and OSHA Site Supervisor training. These are separate classes and as such, require separate initial and recurrent training.

An OSHA Site Supervisor identifies and manages all safety hazards on a HAZWOPER site, keeping all workers safe while at work.


What is OSHA Site Supervisor Training?
OSHA Site Supervisor Training teaches students how to manage workers on an active Hazardous Waste site by maintaining a safe work posture. Examples of what the Supervisor will learn include: Implementing a site health and safety plan (HASP) ensuring workers understand and follow the HASP, learning to identify and recognize hazards, controlling site conditions and hazards to prevent injuries, illness, and property damage, and becoming effective at communication skills.


Who needs Site Supervisor Refresher Training?
Employees who have completed their initial Site Supervisor Certification must receive a refresher course annually to maintain certification. The Site Supervisor refresher is required in addition to annual HAZWOPER refresher training. 


How do I become a site supervisor?
To be eligible, employees must first complete an acceptable 40-hour HAZWOPER training course and remain current on all HAZWOPER Annual Refreshers. With this prerequisite complete, the employee must successfully complete an Initial OSHA Site Supervisor Course (and all annual refreshers). Once the employee has met these basic requirements, the employee may assume the duties (as assigned by an employer) of an OSHA Site Supervisor.

According to OSHA, the Site Supervisor Refresher Course can be taken using only online training as long as it covers training requirements under 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(4) and (8).
